Renovating your Kitchen: Recipe for Creating Everlasting Memories

Food is a sustainable part of life. It is present when we socialize, celebrate, and entertain. Meals enhance the time we spend with others and nourishes our relationships, not to mention our bellies! How lame is a party without food, right?

Food no doubt provides a comfort that nothing else on the planet can satisfy. When you attend a friend’s party, where does everyone hang out? Yup, you are correct…the Kitchen!

Imagine having a newly updated Kitchen that creates a comfortable space where you can enjoy the fellowship of your family and friends. Do you stop and daydream when you see an awesome Kitchen design idea in a magazine? What does your dream Kitchen look like? Do you desire new cabinetry, a bigger pantry, new appliances, or that efficient floor plan with an island and cool bar stools? So, go ahead and dream!

5-step recipe for designing the Kitchen you’ll love:

1. Whip up a sketch to define your floor space. (No, you don’t have to be an artist.) Take a few measurements and cook up a floor plan locating where you want your appliances, worksurfaces, sink, windows, eating area, etc.

2. Label where you want to perform your tasks. (Examples: where to set groceries after shopping, prep foods when cooking, stack dirty dishes, pantry location, and guest hang-out spots)

3. Once you sliced and diced your thoughts on paper, review how far you will travel between the sink, refrigerator, and stove. The secret ingredient is “navigation efficiency” between these 3 critical locations. Remember to have enough space between areas so two “chefs” aren’t tripping over each other, but close enough that you won’t be exhausted after preparing a meal.

4. Once you have your big-picture ideas worked out, marinate your thoughts with this thought: Storage. It’s important to store items in your kitchen as close as possible to where you will use them. (i.e. knives near the prep area)

5. Time to think about the garnishes! Consider where you will need lighting, switches, and electrical outlets.
